SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC announced on Friday the club had acquired goalkeeper Jon Kempin on loan from Major League Soccer side D.C. United through the end of June. The 29-year-old joins the club for a second stint after playing for Head Coach Landon Donovan’s side in 2020.

During the 2020 SD Loyal season, Kempin played in 11 matches (all starts) and recorded five shutouts. The goalkeeper tied for the lowest single-season goals-against average in USL Championship history during the abbreviated campaign, posting a 0.5 GAA and a save percentage of 84.9%.

Kempin started his professional career as a 17-year-old when he signed with Sporting Kansas City as the club’s first Homegrown signing. Kempin made his debut for Sporting KC in a 3-2 win against Orlando City SC in the Third Round of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 30, 2012.

The Leawood, Kansas native spent the first seven years of his career in Kansas City, during which time he spent time on loan in the USL Championship at both Orlando City SC in 2013 and OKC Energy FC in 2014. Kempin has made 53 appearances in the Championship during his career, recording 15 shutouts and a 1.29 goals-against average overall.
