Soca Warriors earn first win in tournament, North Carolina’s Anderson, Las Vegas’ Molina also make impact

Indy Eleven’s Neveal Hackshaw scored his first goal at the international level to send Trinidad and Tobago to victory against the Bahamas on Monday night, giving the Soca Warriors their first win in the tournament’s short history and setting up a chance to move into control of Group C over the final two games of the international window in the upcoming week.

Hackshaw’s performance was among the notable outings from players across the USL Championship, League One and League Two who featured in the second round of games over the past three days across the region.

The veteran defender, making his 25th appearances for Trinidad and Tobago, struck in just the fourth minute as Indy teammate Noah Powder delivered a good corner kick from the right side that found Hackshaw at the back post for a close-range header. Hackshaw had a strong outing overall, finishing with three shots overall while having another opportunity well saved by Bahamas goalkeeper Julio Jemison late in the first half and completing 32 of 37 passes overall.

Powder and Forward Madison FC’s Alvin Jones also started for the Soca Warriors, with Powder putting in a sharp display beyond his early set piece, completing 42 of 45 passes, while Jones completed 69 of 78 passes and had three shots before being replaced by San Antonio FC’s Shannon Gomez in the second half.

Trinidad and Tobago will next face St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a home-and-home series that opens on Friday afternoon at Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent after the Vincy Heat got a late first-half goal from North Carolina FC’s Oalex Anderson in a 2-2 draw against Nicaragua on Monday afternoon.

Anderson had a bright 60 minutes of action and set up the opening goal for the hosts just three minutes into the contest with a through-ball that reached teammate Azinho Solomon for a good finish to the left corner. The NCFC forward then showed off his inventiveness to pull SV&G level in first-half stoppage time with a clever flicked header that redirected a free kick by Solomon past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Elsewhere, Las Vegas Lights FC winger Roberto Molina made a key impact as a second-half substitute for El Salvador on Tuesday night as he saw a late volleyed finish result in the equalizer for La Selecta against Grenada, with Molina’s effort forcing a diving save that left Cristian Gil to turn home the rebound. The goal denied a strong performance by Grenada, for which the Charleston Battery’s AJ Paterson played a key role in its opening goal and El Paso Locomotive FC’s Shavon John-Brown had an energetic performance.

Ten current USL Championship players saw action overall in the contest, with John-Brown squaring off with El Paso teammate Eric Calvillo in the El Salvador starting lineup, FC Tulsa’s Joaquin Rivas and Ronald Rodriguez and Las Vegas Lights FC’s Tomas Romero and Molina also featuring for the visitors. Paterson was joined in the Grenada lineup by Benji Ettienne, while Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC’s Kharlton Belmar and Indy Eleven’s Alex McQueen also came on as second-half substitutes.

Miami FC’s Speedy Williams and Phoenix Rising FC’s Kevon Lambert also put in positive performances as Jamaica took a 3-1 victory against Suriname on Tuesday night to move close to securing a return to the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup with four points from its first two games. Williams completed 26 of 27 passes for the hosts at the National Stadium as 2020 Championship Golden Boot winner Junior Flemmings scored his second goal in as many games for the Reggae Boyz to help them secure victory.
