Scrambling one-handed save on road against Battery claimed top spot in poll

TAMPA, Fla. – New Mexico United’s Alex Tambakis has claimed the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Save of the Month award for May as his acrobatic save on the road against the Charleston Battery to deny a close-range header by Aiden Apodaca claimed top spot in the poll conducted over the past weekend.

Now in his second season with New Mexico, Tambakis has been one of the standout goalkeepers so far this season, adding to an impressive career in the Championship overall. This season, the Greek shot-stopper has moved into second place in the league’s regular-season history in saves. On May 14 at Patriots Point, he produced another outstanding denial, scrambling across his goal after a cross from the right to the back post by the hosts and managed to make a one-handed stop to keep out Apodaca’s diving header inside the six-yard area.

Tambakis’ save earned 38% percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com over the past weekend. The Charleston Battery’s Joe Kuzminsky took second place on 35 percent for an impressive low, diving save to keep out a shot from Loudoun United’s Jacob Greene on May 28, while Memphis 901 FC’s Drew Romig took third place on 12 percent for his diving save to preserve a road shutout against Charleston at Patriots Point on May 6.
