16-year-old Academy product’s outstanding finish at Hartford Athletic claims honor

TAMPA, Fla. – The New York Red Bulls II’s Illia Tyrkus has won the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month award for May as his superb strike against Hartford Athletic at Trinity Health Stadium on May 14 finished top of the poll conducted over the past weekend.

The 16-year-old Red Bulls Academy product is the youngest goalscorer in the Championship this season, with his first goal in the professional ranks coming at the age of 16 years, 287 days old. The strike was an exceptional one, too, with Tyrkus turning on his first touch just inside the top-right edge of the penalty area before delivering a curled finish with his second touch that went just inside the left corner of the net to bring the Red Bulls II level against Hartford.

Tyrkus’ goal earned 47 percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com to claim the award. Phoenix Rising FC’s Greg Hurst finished in second place on 33 percent for his excellent piece of control and turning volley that picked out the right corner against San Antonio FC on May 7 at Wild Horse Pass, while Monterey Bay F.C.’s Chase Boone finished third on 10 percent for his individual finish against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on May 28 at Cardinale Stadium.
