ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The first signing in New Mexico United’s history is back in the club’s colors.

The club announced on Thursday that Devon Sandoval had re-signed following his recovery from heart issues that saw him step away from the game last year. The Albuquerque native has been a driving force for United since the club’s inception, leading Black & Yellow through the club’s first three seasons, having recorded the first goal in New Mexico’s history in 2019 and returns as United’s all-time appearances leader.

“I’ve worked really hard to get to this point where I can step on the field again,” said Sandoval. “I’m extremely grateful for the experiences I’ve had, what I’ve learned the past seven months, and to the people that have helped me get to this point. To continue playing this game is a gift and I can’t wait to be back on the field with you all again.”

A graduate of El Dorado High School and the University of New Mexico, Sandoval was unveiled as the first signing in the club’s history in 2018. In addition to his on-field exploits for the club, Sandoval has been a champion, a captain, a community advocate, and a leader in his home state. The 30-year-old has scored 25 goals in all competitions for United while also notching seven assists over 79 appearances in the club’s colors.

Sandoval scored the first goal in New Mexico United history in its inaugural USL Championship game, while also notching the first playoff goal in club history and the club’s first goal against Major League Soccer opposition. He earned United’s Offensive MVP award as he led the club to a USL Championship Playoffs berth in 2019, and was named club captain each of the past two years.
