Hoppenot records pair of assists, Rodriguez, Faz, Bryant find net in 4-2 victory at Keyworth Stadium

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Detroit City FC reeled off four goals in a span of 18 minutes either side of halftime to build a lead Loudoun United FC was unable to overcome late on in a 4-2 victory at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday night as Antoine Hoppenot had a role in each of the first three goals for the hosts.

Neither side was able to create much in the way of chances early on, and it wasn’t until the 28th minute when Loudoun could have taken the lead if not for an outstanding block by DCFC’s Devon Amoo-Mensah to deny Skage Simonsend’s first-time shot after good work on the left side by Ted Ku-DiPietro. Grant Lillard also had a big chance denied after a clever reverse pass by Simonsend played him into the left side of the penalty area only for Detroit goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher to get enough on his low shot to send it wide of the right post.

After coming close to opening the scoring at one end, Lillard suffered the misfortune of instead doing so at his own end as after a corner kick from the right was recycled by the hosts a low cross by Antoine Hoppenot from the right intended for Pato Botello Faz at the far post was turned into his own net by the defender in the 35th minute. That began a flurry of three goals before the halftime break, with Botello Faz getting his name on the scoresheet four minutes later as Hoppenot raced down the left flank to receive a return pass and centered for the Mexican, who controlled and fired home with his second touch into the right corner of the net.

Both Hoppenot and Maxi Rodriguez had chances well saved by Loudoun goalkeeper Luis Zamudio in the moments that followed, but in first-half stoppage time Hoppenot picked up his second assist of the night as he delivered a corner kick from the left that was headed home at the near post by Michael Bryant to make it a three-goal game. The goals continued to flow for the hosts as the second half began as Rhys Williams beat his defender on the right and after moving into the penalty area cut back a cross for Rodriguez near the penalty spot and a first-time shot that deflected home off a defender.

Loudoun tried to find a way back into the game and midway through the second half Jacob Greene set up a good finish for Simonsend with a clever give-and-go to move up the field in the right channel before setting up the Norwegian forward for a shot to the right corner. Kristian Fletcher was the next beneficiary of Greene’s creativity only for Steinwascher to deny his header with 19 minutes to go, and the visitors continued press late on as Greene and Ku-DiPietro both had chances denied. Lillard found the net for Loudoun in the second minute of stoppage time as he tucked home a cross by Ku-DiPietro, but it proved too late for the visitors to threaten the lead DCFC had built on the way to another home victory.
