Phoenix, Tampa Bay square off on national television in Sunday night showdown

Phoenix Rising FC plays host to the Tampa Bay Rowdies to conclude Week 10’s action in the USL Championship in one of the highly anticipated games in the national television schedule this season.

Here’s a look ahead to the action.

The Lowdown: Phoenix Rising FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies will square off for the second time in the Championship’s regular season, bringing together the sides that topped their respective conferences a season ago at Wild Horse Pass. This season hasn’t gone quite so smoothly for either side so far, with Rising FC currently in fourth place in the Western Conference and the Rowdies seventh in the Eastern Conference. Phoenix claimed a 3-0 victory in its most recent league outing against San Antonio FC last Saturday night as Greg Hurst scored a pair of goals, but the hosts are coming off a 2-0 defeat on the road to Sacramento Republic FC on Wednesday night in the Round of 32 of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. That was another indicator of Rising FC’s home and road form, where the side is 5-1-0 at Wild Horse Pass in the league this season, but only 1-2-0 away from home. The Rowdies, meanwhile, have won only three times in 10 league outings this season with four drawn contests, creating and 11-point gap to Eastern Conference leader Louisville City FC. Tampa Bay suffered a 3-2 defeat to San Diego Loyal SC in its last outing on April 30 at Al Lang Stadium, marking the first time the club had lost after holding a halftime lead since the 2018 season. The visitors will be hoping a two-week break after a busy April will allow a reset and a chance to replicate the 2-1 victory they earned when the teams met on May 15 a year ago at Al Lang Stadium.

Spotlight Players
Phoenix Rising FC – Greg Hurst:
The Scottish forward scored twice in Rising FC’s last home outing a week ago but had a potential game-tying penalty kick saved on Wednesday in the club’s Open Cup elimination. How he responds could be big for the hosts.

Tampa Bay Rowdies – Sebastian Guenzatti: The Rowdies’ captain scored his first goal of the season against San Diego Loyal SC on April 30 and currently sits with 4.09 Expected Goals mark. The visitors will be hoping that opening goal can spark a positive run of form.
