New permanent arrival in Alamo City made major impact over second month of 2022 campaign

TAMPA, Fla. – There weren’t many goalkeepers busier than San Antonio FC’s Jordan Farr in the USL Championship over the month of April.

And as the 27-year-old stepped into the lineup for the first time since his full-time move to the club last offseason, that was just the way he liked it.

“It was nice to get that many saves from a positional standpoint [against Phoenix on April 2], you got to touch the ball a lot,” said Farr, who posted seven saves against Rising FC in his 2022 debut. “A lot of crossing scenarios, a lot of defensive scenarios that I got to see that quickly brought me up to speed with this group, specifically with that run of games.”

With a league-high 18 saves and four shutouts across five games, posting a save percentage of 90 percent and a goals-against average of 0.40, Farr was named as the USL Championship’s Player of the Month for April on Thursday as his form helped SAFC sit as one of the leading contenders to win the Western Conference and challenge for the league title.

Farr’s move to San Antonio from Indy Eleven came after a short stint at the club last postseason. Acquired as an emergency loanee following an injury sustained by starter Matt Cardone in the final game of the regular season, Farr started all three of SAFC’s playoff games. After serving as a backup to fellow new arrival Cristian Bonilla at the start of this season, he picked up the starting spot again after the Colombian elected to retire and has barely looked back. Farr credits the side in front of him for the achievements he’s delivered since joining the starting lineup.

“With this award, being player of the month, as a goalkeeper especially, it comes only at the expense of what the team has done,” said Farr. “I’ve been lucky to be in a position to make saves and to get shutouts but at the end of the day this is a team award. … I couldn’t credit the boys in front of me enough, and then the staff and everyone else behind the scenes as well. I just feel fortunate to be the guy getting the recognition.”

Farr’s own play has shone, though. On three occasions in April he was named to the Championship’s Team of the Week – twice as a starter, once on the bench – and he claimed the Championship’s Fans’ Choice Save of the Week award on three occasions as well. That extended run of play has led to a rising level of confidence for Farr himself, one that could help SAFC claim its first silverware as a club at the end of this season.

“When we’re at the end of games, maybe defending a 1-0 lead, or a lead in general, or maybe we haven’t scored yet, there’s a confidence that I feel with myself, the back three and the wingbacks, the center mids, the forwards, that I have yet to really feel in my career,” said Farr. “It’s something I hope just comes with maturity as a player, but I also feel like it’s something specific that has to do with this group – the confidence that we give one another, the selflessness on not only how we play, but how we give each other praise.

“No-one’s really hiding from giving one another praise. Matt [Cardone is] the first one to congratulate me after every game. That just says from the group what our mentality is, and how we support one another.”

Farr received 58 percent of a weighted poll that included the USL Championship Technical Committee, a national panel of independent media representing every USL market and an online fan vote held at USLChampionship.com. Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s Dane Kelly finished second on 22 percent after recording five goals in five games for the Hounds at an average strike rate of a goal every 53.6 minutes, while Indy Eleven’s Stefano Pinho finished third with eight percent after recording three goals and two assists to lead his side to an undefeated month.
