Close-range denial of El Paso’s Diego Luna earned top spot in poll, monthly award

TAMPA, Fla. – Loudoun United FC’s Joe Rice has snagged the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Save of the Month award for April as his close-range save to deny a potentially brilliant finish by El Paso Locomotive FC’s Diego Luna claimed top spot in the poll conducted over the past weekend.

A standout in USL League One a season ago, Rice made the move to Loudoun United this offseason and was handed his debut against El Paso on 30 at Segra Field. The Virginia native produced an outstanding first-half save to keep the hosts ahead as U.S. U-20 international Luna wove through the Loudoun defense in the right side of the penalty area only to be stymied by Rice, who stood up well to parry the shot before it was cleared to safety.

Rice’s save earned 34% percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com over the past weekend. New Mexico United’s Cody Mizell took second place on 31 percent for his point-blank save to keep out a close-range chance for Phoenix Rising FC’s Marcus Epps on March 16, while San Antonio FC’s Jordan Farr finished second on 29 percent for his diving denial of Phoenix Rising FC’s Aodhan Quinn at Toyota Field on April 2.
