Locomotive FC wins 4-0 to take third victory in a row as Gomez, Luna lead hosts to victory

EL PASO, Texas – Diego Luna had a goal and assist while Josue Aaron Gomez notched a pair of assists as El Paso Locomotive FC took a 4-0 victory against the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at Southwest University Park to continue the club’s recent surge up the Western Conference.

Looking to make a fast start for a second consecutive outing, Los Dos went close in just the third minute as Michael Salazar fired wide of the left post from long range, while six minutes later Remi Cabral got fuller purchase on a shot from 25 yards that went just wide of the right upright. Locomotive FC took the lead in the 16th minute, however, as after a cross from the right by Christiano Francois found Gomez at the back post he turned it back centrally where Eric Calvillo tucked home from close range.

The Galaxy II went close to leveling things up in the 28th minute as Hamza Barry forced a good save by El Paso’s Evan Newton with a curling shot to the right corner, but three minutes later El Paso doubled its lead as LA defender Liam Doyle played a backpass that was almost intercepted by Luis Solignac, only for his pressure to appear to distract Galaxy II goalkeeper Eric Lopez as the ball eluded him and found the net for an own goal. Newton was again called into action in the 36th minute as he saved from Felipe Cobian before Salazar shot wide on the rebound before Locomotive FC struck again as Gomez stole possession in the attacking half and after moving into the penalty area paused and found the advancing run of Luna, who shot low into the right corner.

Solignac went close to a fourth for the hosts 12 minutes into the second half as he turned a close-range finish on target from a cross by Gomez that was punched away by Los Dos’ Lopez, but the Argentine found the net in the 63rd minute when a deflected shot by Dylan Mares spun in the path of Luna, who controlled and sent the ball into the six-yard area where Solignac tucked home. The hosts almost added another with 10 minutes to go as Grenada international Shavon John-Brown was denied at close range, but the hosts rounded out a key week for their potential season with a third consecutive victory to move into the Western Conference playoff positions.
