El Salvador international scores in either half to lead 3-1 victory for hosts at ONEOK Field

TULSA, Okla. – Joaquin Rivas scored a pair of goals as FC Tulsa took a 3-1 victory against Detroit City FC on Saturday night at ONEOK Field to bring the visitors’ four-game winning streak in the league to an end.

Neither side created many clear chances early, but Tulsa took the lead in the 15th minute when a long goal kick by Sean Lewis came directly to Rivas on the right side, from where the El Salvador international drove centrally past a defender and shot low into the bottom-right corner of the net. Six minutes later the hosts doubled their lead as Rivas tried to find JJ Williams inside the penalty area, only for the forward to recover after the pass arrived behind him to poke the ball on to Rodrigo da Costa in the left side of the penalty area for a high finish to the left side.

DCFC’s chances were limited in the opening half-hour overall, but the visitors hit back nine minutes before the halftime break as off a corner kick from the right by Deklan Wynne came to Michael Bryant inside the penalty area after an attempt to clear at the near post. The midfielder controlled and squeezed home a shot just inside the left post to halve the deficit. Tulsa had a chance to restore its advantage five minutes later after a well-worked move that released Jorge Corrales into the left side of the penalty area for a looping cross that Williams headed just over the crossbar but had to settle for a one-goal lead at the break.

The visitors tried to find a way to level in the second half and went close with 18 minutes to go but Macky Diop was unable to get full purchase on his finish from the right side of the penalty area. Six minutes later, though, Tulsa wrapped up the victory as a cross from the left by Corrales was won by Brian Brown, whose header looped to Rivas for a volleyed finish from close range and his second goal of the night. Detroit City had a pair of chances to try and find the net in stoppage time as Connor Rutz fired a free kick just wide of the left post before Francis Atuahene had a chance cleared off the line by Tulsa’s Johnny Fenwick, but the hosts held firm to end their four-game losing streak in impressive style.
