Johnson’s goal late in first half proves difference as Athletic earn 1-0 win at Trinity Health Stadium

HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford Athletic claimed its first victory in the USL Championship this season as Joel Johnson’s goal late in the first half earned a 1-0 win against Loudoun United FC at Trinity Health Stadium.

The teams exchanged half-chances early on with Loudoun’s Skage Simonsen getting the first good look in the 13th minute as he broke onto a pass by Sami Guediri from the left but sent his finish over the crossbar from 12 yards. Three minutes later, Hartford’s Andre Lewis had a good opportunity as well but his header from eight yards went straight to United goalkeeper Luis Zamudio after a good cross by Younes Boudadi. The hosts threatened again just past the half-hour mark as Zamudio kept out a long-range effort by Conor McGlynn, but four minutes before halftime the Athletic struck as Corey Hertzog controlled near the halfway line and released Johnson in for a breakaway chance that he slotted home low from 10 yards.

The hosts went close to adding a second in the 65th minute when Prince Saydee found space in the right channel and curled a shot just wide of the left post, and the Liberian winger almost added a second with five minutes to go as he rang the right post after breaking into the penalty area. The visitors were unable to find a late test for Hartford goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton, however, who only recorded one save on the night to earn a shutout.
