McCabe, Ownby lead way as visitors take 4-0 victory at Fifth Third Bank Stadium

KENNESAW, Ga. – Niall McCabe had a goal and assist while Brian Ownby notched his first two assists of the season as Louisville City FC took a 4-0 victory against Atlanta United 2 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, running the side’s undefeated streak to 10 games to start the 2022 USL Championship regular season.

LouCity got out to an ideal start as less than a minute after Wilson Harris had a shot deflected over the crossbar in the fifth minute, Paolo DelPiccolo put the visitors ahead, flicking home a header off a cross from the left by McCabe into the right corner of the net from 10 yards. Atlanta had a chance to hit back just before the half-hour mark when Darwin Matheus put a close-range header on target that was well saved by Louisville goalkeeper Kyle Morton, while in the 33rd minute McCabe had a good chance denied by Atlanta’s Vicente Reyes to keep it a one-goal game going to the break.

The visitors had a big chance to add to their lead just over a minute into the second half as Harris drove into space on a counterattack after a good pass by Jorge Gonzalez but sent his finish wide of the right post. Matheus continued to provide the danger for the hosts, meanwhile, and was kept out again by Morton on a sharp strike from the left side of the penalty area in the 51st minute. Two minutes later, however, McCabe struck as he fired home a shot from 25 yards across his body to the left corner of the net to double LouCity’s lead.

Louisville added a third on the hour-mark as Ownby cut into the right channel and played a through-ball for Gonzalez into the penalty area that the Spaniard lifted over the advancing goalkeeper. Ownby then picked up his second assist of the night with five minutes to go as his cross from the right was turned home at the top of the six-yard area by Napo Matsoso, wrapping up victory as LouCity moved seven points clear at the top of the Eastern Conference.
