Two teams have made blistering starts to the 2022 USL Championship season, coming close to the best eight-game start in league history, while Louisville City FC will try to join an exclusive club on Wednesday night as it tries to continue its best start to a season in club history.

Here’s more on both of those topics, a look ahead to upcoming individual landmarks, and the Week 9 Discipline Report in this week’s News & Notes.

NEWS AND NOTES

COLORADO SPRINGS, SAN ANTONIO MAKE FLYING START
Having each taken seven wins from their first eight games this season, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and San Antonio FC approach the quarter-mark of the campaign having equaled the second-best starts in a USL Championship regular season through eight games. Overall, eight teams in the Championship’s 12 seasons have accumulated at least 20 points through their opening eight games of the season, with Colorado Springs and San Antonio becoming the first two teams to do so since Real Monarchs SLC (21pts) and San Antonio FC (22pts) opened the 2017 campaign at a blistering pace.

As you’ll note from above, while Colorado Springs’ start is its best in club history – surpassing earning 18 points from its opening eight games in 2016 – San Antonio’s opening run is only its second-best in its history following its 2017 campaign. That season, SAFC opened the year with a 14-game undefeated streak (10-0-4) before finishing second in the Western Conference to the Monarchs. If there’s a warning from prior fast starts, though, it’s that it doesn’t always hold. Of the teams to record at least 20 points in their first eight games of a season, only one – the Rochester Rhinos in 2015 – went on to win the USL Championship Final.

Louisville City FC has built its best start to a season in club history with 21 points through nine games after Saturday’s 2-0 victory against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, and now are looking to become part of the group of teams that have recorded a 10-game undefeated streak to start a USL Championship regular season on Wednesday night when they face Atlanta United 2.

LouCity would become the ninth team in the Championship’s history to record at least a 10-game undefeated streak to start a season. The record is still held by the Richmond Kickers’ 22-game run at the start of the 2013 campaign that also stands as the second-longest undefeated streak in the Championship’s history.

MEMPHIS’ GOODRUM NOTCHES 13TH-FASTEST USL CHAMPIONSHIP GOAL

Memphis 901 FC’s Phillip Goodrum earned a place in the USL Championship Record Book last Wednesday night as he recorded the 13th-fastest goal in the league’s history, scoring after just 20 seconds against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in a 3-1 victory for Memphis at AutoZone Park. Goodrum’s goal was also the fastest in 901 FC history, surpassing a goal by Kyle Murphy after 1 minute, 52 seconds against Louisville City FC on September 25, 2021.

ROWDIES’ SUFFER FIRST COMEBACK DEFEAT SINCE 2018
The Tampa Bay Rowdies ended April with a 3-2 defeat against San Diego Loyal SC that broke one of the more notable active streaks in the USL Championship, with the side having not suffered a defeat after holding a lead in the USL Championship’s regular season since June 22, 2018 prior to its loss at Al Lang Stadium to SD Loyal, a span of 1,409 days.

The contest broke a streak of 50 consecutive games in which the Rowdies had earned either a win or a draw when holding a lead at halftime and was only the fourth time overall since the club joined the USL Championship that it had suffered defeat after holding a lead overall. There are now two USL Championship teams that currently sit with streaks of over 1,000 days since they lost a game in which they held the lead, with Phoenix Rising FC’s last comeback defeat coming in a 5-2 loss at Las Vegas Lights FC on October 10, 2018, and Indy Eleven’s last coming in a 2-1 defeat to the New York Red Bulls II on April 28, 2019.
