Former Mexico international notches pair of headed finishes in 2-1 win at H-E-B Park

EDINBURG, Texas – Erick “Cubo” Torres scored both goals as Orange County SC claimed its second win of the season with a 2-1 victory against Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday night at H-E-B Park to break a two-game winning streak for the hosts.

Orange County made an ideal start as after just three minutes the visitors were able to hold possession in the attacking third for Daniel Pedersen, whose cross from the right found Torres at the back post for a clinical header just inside the left post. The Toros hit back immediately, however, as Frank Lopez stole possession in the attacking third and after drawing the goalkeeper played a pass to Ricky Ruiz for a simple finish.

RGVFC went close to taking the lead in the 27th minute when Isidro Martinez fired a shot just wide of the left post after turning into space 25 yards from goal, while Ruiz had a header saved a few minutes later. The visitors regained the lead six minutes before the break, however, as Torres found space to head home for a second time as he got on the end of a free kick by Tony Rocha and buried his finish into the left corner.

The hosts tried to pull level again, and Lopez curled a shot wide of the right post from distance shortly before halftime before Juan David Cabezas had an effort blocked over the crossbar shortly after the hour-mark. The Toros threatened again with 10 minutes to go as a cross fell to Dylan Borczak in the right side of the penalty area for a sharp shot that was saved by Orange County’s Patrick Rakovsky.
