Francis Atuahene scores winner as hosts continue winning run at Keyworth Stadium

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Francis Atuahene had a role in both goals as Detroit City FC scored twice in the final 10 minutes to take a 2-0 victory against the New York Red Bulls II on Saturday evening at Keyworth Stadium, a fourth consecutive win for the hosts.

Neither side was able to create a clear chance early on as Detroit City’s Pato Botello Faz had a half-chance from close range in the 21st minute saved, and it wasn’t until the 11 minutes later that the hosts had their first real threat as Maxi Rodriguez found Connor Rutz near the top of the penalty area for a shot that was deflected just high and wide of the right corner of the net. Botello Faz then appeared to have put his side ahead on a glancing header off a cross by Antoine Hoppenot in first-half stoppage time, only for the offside flag to be raised and send the teams to the break scoreless.

Botello Faz had another chance inside the opening minute of the second half as his finish from another cross from the right by Hoppenot found the side-netting at the near post, but the Red Bulls II went closer in the 52nd minute as Juan Castillo fired a half-volley off the crossbar and behind for a goal kick. New York went close again with 10 minutes to go when Cameron Harper had a shot parried behind by DCFC goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher on a shot from the right side of the penalty area.

Two minutes later, Detroit grabbed the lead as Rhys Williams found space on the right side to deliver a low cross to the top of the six-yard area where Atuahene put home a finish from close range at the second attempt. DCFC added a second in the final minute when a cross by Atuahene from the left was turned into his own goal by New York’s Lucas Monzon, wrapping up the victory for the hosts as they continued their upward trajectory in the Eastern Conference.
