Second-half strike earns Birmingham 2-1 victory in second consecutive win for hosts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Prosper Kasim scored both goals including an outstanding late winner to send Birmingham Legion FC to a 2-1 victory against the Charleston Battery on Wednesday night at Protective Stadium to move the hosts above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference.

Legion FC made a positive start as Kasim had a chance saved in the ninth minute by Battery goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux. Two minutes later the hosts hit the front as a quick throw-in down the left flank sent Enzo Martinez into enough space to cut back a cross from the byline that found its way to a late-arriving Kasim, who fired low into the left corner of the net from the center of the penalty area.

The Battery hit back just past the half-hour mark, though, as Augustine Williams delivered a good cross from the right corner that was volleyed home by Aidan Apodaca into the right side of the net. After going to the break even, both sides then had chances early in the second half as first Birmingham’s Marlon had a curling shot parried away before Apodaca went close to his second of the night in the 57th minute with a low drive to the right corner that Legion FC’s Matt VanOekel got down well to save.

Kasim put Birmingham back in front with 18 minutes to go as he received a pass from Mikey Lopez in space on the right 45 yards from goal, drove forward into a central position and unleashed a brilliant strike from 20 yards to the top-left corner of the net. Charleston had a late chance to level, but Williams’ shot from 16 yards flashed off target as Legion FC took its first back-to-back wins of the season.
