Visitors take first win at Isotopes Park on second-half penalty kick to earn sixth victory of campaign

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – San Antonio FC continued its strong start to the season as it took a 1-0 victory against New Mexico United on Saturday night at Isotopes Park as Justin Dhillon scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

San Antonio had a pair of early chances to take the lead, the first of which came in the seventh minute when Dhillon flicked a header just wide of the left post off a free kick by Fabien Garcia. Four minutes later, Shannon Gomez had a chance at the back post off a cross by Carter Manley from the right but screwed his shot wide of the target. The hosts carved out their first chance of the night in the 25th minute, meanwhile, when Chris Wehan’s low shot to the left corner was saved by SAFC’s Jordan Farr as the game reached the break scoreless.

The visitors continued to create the better chances as the game progressed, though, and in the 57th minute they almost took the lead when a free kick was headed back across goal by Mitchell Taintor to Fabien Garcia, whose header hit the crossbar before the rebound was shot over by Connor Maloney. The breakthrough came for San Antonio in the 67th minute after Dhillon was brought down just inside the penalty area, and the forward stepped up himself to shoot down the middle as Cody Mizell dove to the left corner of the net.

United tried to get back on level terms and Daniel Bruce first a long-range effort just wide of the top-right corner with 17 minutes remaining. Farr also had to make a pair of alert late saves to keep out chances for Jerome Kiesewetter and Raddy Ovouka, but the visitors held on to take their first win all-time in four visits to Isotopes Park.
