Borczak scores in second minute of added time to send hosts to 2-1 victory at H-E-B Park

EDINBURG, Texas – Dylan Borczak scored in second-half stoppage time as Rio Grande Valley FC took its second consecutive league victory with a 2-1 win against Sacramento Republic FC at H-E-B Park on Saturday night.

Sacramento almost struck first in the fifth minute when Emil Cuello was played into space on the right and clipped a cross that was headed just over the crossbar by Luther Archimede. Chances proved difficult to come by overall for both sides before the break, however, with the Toros’ first good look on goal coming three minutes before halftime as Juan David Cabezas fired over the crossbar from the top of the penalty area.

RGVFC brought on Stefan Mueller as a substitute to start the second half, and that move paid off just past the hour-mark when he helped the hosts open the scoring. A break down the left by Mueller saw him deliver a chipped cross into the penalty area that was met at the back post by a first-time finish by Luka Malesevic that found the top-right corner of the net. Republic FC hit back with 18 minutes to go as a free kick by Rodrigo Lopez from outside the top-right corner of the penalty area was mis-cleared by RGVFC’s Wahab Ackwei, allowing Conor Donovan to tap in from inside the six-yard area for the visitors.

Borczak delivered all three points for the Toros in stoppage time, however, as Jonathan Ricketts stole possession on the right flank and surged forward, delivering a cross that deflected off a defender at the near post and sat up ideally for the first-year pro, who fired home from the top of the six-yard area to send the hosts to a much-needed win.
