Mushagalusa’s second-half goal earns victory 1-1 result on road against Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Enoch Mushagalusa scored a second-half equalizer as Louisville City FC ran its undefeated streak to start the 2022 USL Championship regular season to eight games after a 1-1 draw against the Charleston Battery on Saturday evening at Patriots Point.

LouCity opened the more positive of the two sides and had the first look on goal as Mushagalusa got past his marker but fired low into the side-netting from the left side of the penalty area. The Battery pulled into the game as the half went on, however, and Aidan Apodaca shot just over from 25 yards midway through the half after a good give-and-go. Charleston’s Andrew Booth also had a shot deflect just wide of the left post on the half-hour mark, but two minutes later the hosts took the lead when Booth blocked a LouCity pass into the path of Mauro Cichero, who shot low into the left corner from just inside the top of the penalty area.

Apodaca almost made it two for the hosts five minutes before halftime on a sliding shot that LouCity goalkeeper Kyle Morton turned wide of his left post, and Booth also went close to a second with 25 minutes as he controlled a looping ball over the top and shot low to the left corner, only to be denied. After going without a shot for more than half-an-hour, though, Louisville found its rhythm in the final third and almost leveled in the 68th minute when Mushagalusa had a shot to the left corner turned wide by Battery goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky. Five minutes later, Mushagalusa squeezed home a shot at the near post from the left side of the penalty area after being found in space by Corben Bone to pull the visitors level.

LouCity went close to grabbing all three points with five minutes remaining when Wilson Harris cut into the top-right of the penalty area and curled a left-footed shot off the left post that caromed away to safety, and the visitors looked the more likely to earn the victory as the minutes ticked away. Harris shot just wide of the right post on a turning shot, while Mushagalusa might have crossed instead of electing to shooting deep in stoppage time on a counterattack chance that was saved. The Battery held on to earn a draw and earn their first point since the opening day of the regular season.
