2021 USL Championship Young Player of the Year Jonathan Gomez has been named in the Mexico squad that will play Guatemala in an international exhibition next Wednesday night at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

The former Louisville City FC and current Real Sociedad defender is in position to become only the fourth player to represent both the United States and Mexico at the senior international level, having previously been called up to the Mexico U-20 national team and for training with the senior national team prior to the Concacaf Nations League last May.

This past December, Gomez became the first active USL Championship player to appear for the USMNT in an exhibition against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Current USL League One club Central Valley Fuego FC Head Coach Martin Vazquez, LA Galaxy defender Julian Araujo and current free agent Edgar Castillo have done so previously.

Gomez joined Real Sociedad this January from LouCity and has subsequently made 10 appearances for Real Sociedad B in La Liga 2, recording 766 minutes of action and four key passes. The 18-year-old was voted to the Championship’s All-League First Team last fall in addition to earning Young Player of the Year honors as he recorded two goals, eight assists and 44 chances created in 29 appearances across the regular season and playoffs.

Also named alongside Gomez is 2019 USL Championship-title winner David Ochoa, who claimed the league title three years ago with Real Monarchs SLC as he recorded 69 saves and a save percentage of 71.9% in 20 appearances while starting every game of the club’s run to the title in the playoffs.
