PHOENIX – Greg Hurst’s goal with 10 minutes to go sent Phoenix Rising FC into the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for only the second time in club history as the hosts took a 2-1 victory against fellow USL Championship club New Mexico United on Wednesday night at Wild Horse Pass.

The game-winner came via local product Channing Chasten, who swung in a cross from the right flank that found Santi Moar in the left side of the penalty area. The Spaniard headed back across goal where Hurst was on hand to deftly flick a header into the bottom-right corner of the net, earning the side its fifth consecutive victory across all competitions.

Phoenix had originally broken through in the sixth minute when Aodhan Quinn played a quick ball into the corner for Joey Calistri, who collected the pass on the right edge of the penalty area and attempted to play a cross to the back post. Fortunately for Rising FC, the ball caromed off a New Mexico defender  and looped high into the air, over the head of United goalkeeper Ford Parker before dropping just underneath the crossbar.

Calistri nearly had a second in the 42nd minute when Joe Farrell stepped in to intercept a pass and started a counterattack with a ball upfield to Marcus Epps. The winger took off toward goal before playing a pass to Calistri on the right flank. The Chicago native feinted before cutting centrally and curling a shot that went just wide of the left post.

New Mexico equalized in the 65th minute when a long ball played over the top got in-between Phoenix’s back line and goalkeeper Ben Lundt, allowing United forward Neco Brett to steal in and control before poking a finish past Lundt to level the game. Seven minutes later Phoenix might have regained the lead when Ryan Flood took a pass from Moar in space in the left side of the penalty area, but his finish was brilliantly saved by Parker as he came off his line to slam the door from very close range.

That chance would prove academic, however, as Hurst’s goal sent Rising FC through and into the draw for the Round of 32 on Thursday at 12 p.m. ET.
