Law records early goal, late assist on Briggs’ stoppage-time finish in 2-1 victory for hosts

INDIANAPOLIS – Aris Briggs scored the winner in second-half stoppage time as Indy Eleven took its second victory in a row with a 2-1 result against Atlanta United 2 on Saturday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium.

Neither side made a fast start, but Indy took the lead in the 12th minute on the first official shot of the game when Nicky Law curled a free kick into the right corner of the net from just outside the top of the penalty area. The hosts went close to a second nine minutes later only for Stefano Pinho’s header to drift wide of the right post off a cross by Bryam Rebellon. While the visitors held more possession and came into the game as the half went on they were unable to seriously test Indy goalkeeper Elliot Panicco with David Mejia’s low shot from 20 yards the only effort on target in the opening half.

Atlanta’s second effort on target pulled the visitors level, however, as Jackson Conway scored his fourth goal of the season with a sharp first-time finish into the left corner of the net off a low cross by Grant Howard in the 68th minute.  The teams then exchanged chances in the final 20 minutes with Indy’s Jonas Fjeldberg having a good low effort turned wide of the right post by Atlanta’s Justin Garces before Aidan McFadden’s shot for the visitors was comfortably handled.

Indy had a pair of late chances to take victory as in the 85th minute substitute Manuel Arteaga had first-time shot from 15 yards parried by Garces before a defender cleared the rebound, and the Venezuelan went close again a minute later with a header off a cross by Ayoze that was claimed by the goalkeeper. The decisive goal arrived in the second minute of stoppage time, however, as Law played a pair of one-two passes to get into the right side of the penalty area and delivered a low cross that Briggs turned home to send the hosts to victory.
