Karlsson scores in second-half stoppage time to cap wild conclusion

OAKLAND, Calif. – Ottar Magnus Karlsson scored deep in second-half stoppage time as Oakland Roots SC rallied twice while down to 10 players to earn a 2-2 draw with San Diego Loyal SC on Wednesday night at Laney Stadium after the sides exchanged three goals in the closing minutes.

Oakland produced the first chance of the night in the sixth minute when Charlie Dennis fired into the side-netting from the left side of the penalty area, but the game took time to warm up properly before Evan Conway almost put the visitors ahead with a flicked header in the 22nd minute that went just wide of the right post off a cross by Elijah Martin from the left flank. Conway almost put SD Loyal ahead again in the 36th minute but was unable to put his header on target from close range after Andrew Carleton’s cross from the top-right edge of the penalty area was deflected at the top of the penalty area, while Oakland’s Tarek Morad glanced a header wide of the right post off a free kick from the left by Dennis as the game went to the break scoreless.

San Diego took the lead seven minutes into the second half, however, when the visitors turned over possession in the Oakland half and Carleton found Collin Martin for a shot from just inside the top of the penalty area that found the left side of the net. SD Loyal almost doubled its lead six minutes later as Grant Stoneman rose highest to head goalward, only to have his shot acrobatically cleared by Roots SC’s Matias Fissore with a bicycle kick.

Oakland was reduced to 10 men in the 64th minute, though, when Morad was sent off for his second yellow card, and San Diego looked to take advantage. Thomas Amang went close to a second for the visitors with 15 minutes to go, only for his shot to drift wide of the right post from the left side of the penalty area after he had beaten Oakland goalkeeper Benny Diaz to a pass into the left side of the penalty area.

Despite being down a player, Oakland leveled the game with four minutes to go when Edgardo Rito delivered a fine cross from the right that was volleyed home by Azocar at the back post into the bottom-left corner of the net. The game tilted back in favor of the visitors in the final minute when Stoneman put home an overhead finish after Amang’s initial effort had been punched away by Diaz in the Oakland goal. With the game in the final minute of stoppage time, however, Karlsson delivered an equalizer for Roots SC as his header off an angled ball into the penalty area from the right by Emrah Klimentah found the right corner of the net, giving the hosts a last-gasp point after a thrilling ending.
