Gomez scores twice, Fox, Mares, Luna also find net in first win of season for El Paso

EL PASO, Texas – El Paso Locomotive FC swept to its first victory under Head Coach John Hutchinson as Josue Aaron Gomez scored twice and Dylan Mares had a goal and assist in a 5-0 victory against Monterey Bay F.C. on Saturday night at Southwest University Park.

Looking for its first points of the season, El Paso opened brightly and in the 10th minute saw Andrew Fox fired a free kick on target that was saved by MBFC goalkeeper Dallas Jaye. The Guam international was called into action again to make a good low save on United States U-20 international Diego Luna on a shot from 10 yards, turning the ball wide of the right post, but in the 19th minute El Paso took the lead when Mares’ back-post corner kick from the left found Fox arriving late for a header just inside the right post.

Locomotive FC doubled its lead from the penalty spot 10 minutes before halftime as from another set piece opportunity, Fox was pushed over at the back post off a corner kick by Richie Ryan from the right. Gomez stepped up and fired his shot just beyond the dive of Jaye and into the left corner of the net, and the road became steeper for the visitors shortly before halftime after Robbie Crawford was sent off for his second caution of the night. Gomez added his second of the night two minutes into the second half when he broke onto a pass by Eder Borelli and chipped a finish past Jaye before Luna added a fourth in the 51st minute, skipping past the challenge of his defender on the left before cutting into the penalty area and firing home at the near post for his 10th goal in El Paso colors.

Mares tried to add another for the hosts in the 57th minute only for his near-post effort from the left side of the penalty area to be saved, while Luna was also kept out 14 minutes later with a header as he arrived on time for a chipped cross to the top of the six-yard area. Mares’ efforts on the night were rewarded with 15 minutes to go, however, as he received possession just outside the penalty area, cut onto his left foot and threaded a low shot through a crowd into the bottom-right corner of the net for El Paso’s fifth, wrapping up a convincing victory for the hosts.
