Amoh notches goal, assist as Colorado Springs wins fifth consecutive game to start season

LAS VEGAS – Elvis Amoh had a goal and assist as Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC took its fifth consecutive victory to start the season after rallying for a 3-2 win against Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday afternoon at Cashman Field.

The Switchbacks got onto the front foot early and almost took the lead in the fifth minute when a looping header by Amoh off a cross by Malik Johnson from the right had Lights FC goalkeeper Abraham Romero scrambling to save. Romero was called on again to tip away another effort by Amoh in the 14th minute from a tight angle, but in the 22nd minute the Ghanaian forward broke through with a flicked header to the left corner off an angled cross from the right by Matt Mahoney.

The visitors had a big chance to double their lead five minutes before halftime when Michee Ngalina was played in behind the defense by Hadji Barry into the left channel, only for Romero to make an outstanding kick-save on a shot to the right corner. That proved key three minutes later as Lights FC pulled level when Cal Jennings’ got into the right side of the penalty area and delivered a low cross that deflected off Mahoney and into the net for an own goal.

Colorado Springs continued to create chances to start the second half but was unable to make its pressure pay off, and just past the hour-mark Las Vegas made the visitors pay as Cal Jennings received possession 30 yards from goal, and after driving forward to his left cut back past a defender for a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner of the net.

The Switchbacks hit back with 20 minutes to go, however, as Zach Zandi roofed a finish from the right side of the penalty area to even the game, and then five minutes later the visitors hit the front again after Cam Lindley delivered a precise finish from 25 yards into the bottom-right corner of the net. While Las Vegas tried to find a late answer as Jennings twice had chances in the final 10 minutes, Colorado Springs held firm defensively to move within a win of equaling the longest winning streak in club history.
