SAN DIEGO – Jacob Crull marked his first start for San Diego Loyal SC with an 89th-minute winner as the visitors claimed victory in their first game in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 2-1 win against Albion SC at Canyon Crest Academy on Wednesday night.

SD Loyal had the better of the first half and made that superiority count in the final minute before the break when Jack Blake played Evan Conway in behind the Albion defense. The young forward squeezed a finish past the goalkeeper into the left side of the net and a halftime lead.

Albion began to come into the game in the second half and equalized in the 65th minute through Mayele Malango. SD Loyal was able to remain level before making a key late triple substitution that included the introduction of Alejandro Guido to the game with nine minutes to go. Guido provided the service from the left off a corner kick with a minute to go that allowed Crull to head home powerfully and restore SD Loyal’s lead.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men soon after when Jacob Haupt was sent off in the second minute of stoppage time. While SD Loyal had chances to add a third goal on the counterattack late on as Thomas Amang in particular threatened, the side saw out the result comfortably to advance into Friday’s Third Round draw.
