10-man LouCity holds on for 0-0 draw as Morton records five-save shutout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC was unable to take advantage of playing up a man for more than a half as Louisville City FC earned a 0-0 draw on Saturday night at Protective Stadium thanks to a five-save shutout by goalkeeper Kyle Morton.

Both sides had half-chances in the opening 20 minutes as first Legion FC’s Marlon found space on the right for a low shot that was saved by LouCity’s Kyle Morton before the visitor’s Brian Ownby dribbled into space centrally but had his shot from 20 yards claimed by Birmingham’s Matt VanOekel. The hosts began to look the more dangerous as the half went on, however, and Morton came up with a pair of solid saves to keep out well-worked efforts from Marlon and Enzo Martinez.

Louisville was reduced to 10 men shortly before the end of the first half when Matsoso was sent off following an altercation after a foul near the halfway line. The first chance of the second half came to the visitors, but Sean Totsch was unable to get full purchase on his header after a good free kick by young midfielder Carlos Moguel. The hosts began to push to find the lead, and midway through the half Anderson Asiedu sent a shot from the top of the penalty area over the crossbar. A few minutes later, Morton denied a one-on-one opportunity for Prosper Kasim after the Ghanaian beat the LouCity back line on a clever lifted pass by Bruno Lapa.

Kasim had another chance as the game ticked into stoppage time after a good through-ball by Macky Diop released him into the left channel, only for his finish to go straight at a well-positioned Morton for the save. Honors ended even, however, as Louisville held firm defensively to remain undefeated so far in the campaign.
