Aguilera scores second-half equalizer in home opener after Salazar struck for visitors

INDIANAPOLIS – Raul Aguilera Jr. scored a second-half equalizer as Indy Eleven earned a 1-1 draw with the LA Galaxy II on Saturday night at Michael A. Carroll Stadium in the first official meeting between the two sides as the hosts earned a second consecutive draw.

Indy had a pair of good chances in the opening 10 minutes when first Jonas Fjeldberg rose highest at a corner kick to flick a header that was going just off target before LA’s defense cleared the danger, and then a minute later Bryam Rebellon fired just over the crossbar as he arrived late to strike Fjeldberg’s cutback cross from the left side of the penalty area. The hosts had other chances, too, but Los Dos took the lead 10 minutes before halftime when Indy goalkeeper Elliot Panicco was unable to cleanly claim a low cross by Cameron Dunbar from the top-right edge of the penalty area under pressure, allowing Michael Salazar to fire home the rebound.

The hosts pulled back level just past the hour-mark, however, as a cross from the right by Rebellon wasn’t handled cleanly, and in the ensuing battle for possession, Fjeldberg shuffled the ball back to Aguilera, who controlled and shot through a crowd of players into the right corner of the net. A minute later, Indy almost took the lead as Sam Brown’s header off a corner kick by Nicky Law from the right was well saved by LA’s Richard Sanchez. The hosts had one final chance to grab victory in stoppage time when AJ Cochran got on the end of a corner kick by Noah Powder from the right only for his header to go wide of the right post, and shortly after the final whistle arrived to leave honors even.
