Undefeated LouCity holds onto top spot, Switchbacks shift up after strong road performance

Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of the Championship’s Power Rankings, where we’ve got two perfect teams remaining, but no change to the top spot in the standing.

In fact, we’ve got no change in the top two spots despite Louisville City FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies each being held to a draw on home turf on Saturday night thanks to their dominant victories earlier in the week. The numbers say that so far, LouCity and the Rowdies have been the dominant teams, as you’d expect for the two teams that have contested the past two Eastern Conference Finals.

The two teams that are still perfect? Well, one of them seems justifiably so with Colorado Springs’ balance earning it a third consecutive win on the road at Birmingham Legion FC, a place the Rowdies were unable to take victory previously this season. The other in San Antonio FC? Well, they’re winning, but the margins seem slim as to whether this is sustainable. Right now, SAFC’s Expected Points mark according to American Soccer Analysis sits at 3.98xP, below that of teams like El Paso Locomotive FC (4.51xP), which has yet to get off the mark.

Of course, you can create your own luck in this game. Just don’t be surprised when it runs out.

Summary

1 Louisville City FC
(3-1-0)
Week 4: @ BHM

Last Week:
1
LouCity finally conceded in its fourth game, but this team continues to look good in all areas of the field despite Saturday’s home draw.
2 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(2-0-2)
Week 4: @ OAK

Last Week:
2
The Rowdies have the second-highest expected goals mark in the league to Louisville, and while that may not put a silver lining on Saturday’s draw, they’re clearly going all out to entertain.
3 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(3-0-0)
Week 4: @ MIA
4
Last Week:
7
The Switchbacks have yet to allow an opponent more than 1.00xG in a game this season, an early indicator that the club is going to be a serious challenger this campaign.
4 San Antonio FC
(3-0-0)
Week 4: v. PHX
1
Last Week:
3
San Antonio keeps living on the edge in finding victories. Credit for doing so right now, but the control the side showed in games last season hasn’t appeared quite yet.
5 San Diego Loyal SC
(3-1-0)
Week 4: v. ELP

Last Week:
5
SD Loyal could have earned a point in Tulsa if it had put one of its chances away. Instead, it went in and took a big victory against Phoenix Rising FC to become the first official away winner at Wild Horse Pass.
6 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(2-0-1)
Week 4: v. LDN
2
Last Week:
4
The Hounds were in complete control of the situation at halftime in Detroit and will be disappointed to have that wrested away in the manner DCFC accomplished in the second half.
7 New Mexico United
(2-0-1)
Week 4: v. OAK
1
Last Week:
6
New Mexico kept its undefeated record, but that late equalizer by Orange County will sting a bit. A lesson to quickly learn ahead of Wednesday’s contest with Oakland.
8 Orange County SC
(1-1-1)
Week 4: BYE

Last Week:
8
Head Coach Richard Chaplow likely won’t want his side to need to rely on late goals consistently to earn points but credit the visitors with coming up with the finish they needed in New Mexico.
9 Sacramento Republic FC
(2-1-0)
Week 4: v. MB
2
Last Week:
11
A second consecutive home game with a late winner for Republic FC, and overall it was hard to argue the side didn’t deserve it after creating the better chances overall against Tulsa.
10 FC Tulsa
(2-2-0)
Week 4: v. NY

Last Week:
10
One up, one down on the week for Tulsa as it battled to hold off San Diego Loyal SC in midweek before falling to Sacramento. Still a decent week overall.
11 Loudoun United FC
(2-0-1)
Week 4: @ PIT
3
Last Week:
14
Three games, three shutouts and seven points have Loudoun out to a strong start after earning a point in Miami. Big test next in Pittsburgh.
12 Detroit City FC
(1-1-1)
Week 4: v. MEM
1
Last Week:
13
DCFC’s response to a difficult first half against Riverhounds SC was impressive, and in keeping with a team that looks like it’ll be in the long-term race for a playoff berth.
13 The Miami FC
(1-1-1)
Week 4: v. COS
1
Last Week:
12
Miami had an early goal ruled out against Loudoun, but then didn’t manage a shot on target the rest of the way. There’s work to be done in the attacking third.
14 Memphis 901 FC
(2-1-0)
Week 4: @ DET
5
Last Week:
19
The strong defensive discipline Memphis showed to limit the chances Las Vegas’ attack could create offered a blueprint for others. Jeremy Kelly’s addition has also been a big pick-up.
15 Las Vegas Lights FC
(2-2-0)
Week 4: @ CHS
2
Last Week:
17
Lights FC won a roller-coaster of a game on Wednesday night in El Paso before seeing its winning streak end to Memphis. The Golden Elvis trophy will now take up residence at Graceland.
16 Phoenix Rising FC
(1-2-0)
Week 4: @ SA
7
Last Week:
9
It’s early, but Phoenix’s record reflects the performances it has delivered. The club’s three points from three games mirror its 3.41 Expected Points so far, and the defensive issues Las Vegas showed up were on show again.
17 Birmingham Legion FC
(0-2-1)
Week 3: v. LOU
2
Last Week:
15
Tough outing at home against a good team in Colorado Springs on Saturday. Legion FC is going to need to find its feet in the attacking third soon, which could be difficult as LouCity visits.
18 El Paso Locomotive FC
(0-3-0)
Week 4: @ SD
2
Last Week:
16
The underlying numbers say El Paso’s better than its record right now, but Wednesday night’s defensive lapses just shouldn’t happen for a club with this quality.
19 Monterey Bay F.C.
(1-2-0)
Week 4: @ SAC
5
Last Week:
24
The first win in MBFC’s history had all the drama you could want, and rewarded the travelling support with some history in anticipation of May’s home opener.
20 Rio Grande Valley FC
(1-3-0)
Week 4: BYE
2
Last Week:
18
With Frank Lopez injury on Sunday night, the Toros are thin up top, which is partly why their record is where it is as the side underperforms its Expected Goals mark (3G to 5.56xG).
21 Indy Eleven
(0-2-1)
Week 4: v. LA
1
Last Week:
22
Getting that first point on the board to cap a three-game road trip was positive. Doing so against your biggest rival on the road could mark a big step forward for Indy.
22 Hartford Athletic
(0-1-1)
Week 3: v. ATL
1
Last Week:
23
That was a pretty backs-to-the-wall display by Hartford in Tampa Bay, they’ll be aiming for a bit more creativity going back to Trinity Health Stadium this weekend against Atlanta.
23 LA Galaxy II
(1-2-0)
Week 4: @ IND
2
Last Week:
25
Los Dos earned a good midweek victory against Rio Grande Valley FC, but we’d still like to see a little more in terms of attacking execution.
24 Oakland Roots SC
(0-3-0)
Week 4: @ NM,v. TBR
3
Last Week:
21
It feels like the results are going to start to come for Roots SC, but that late concession on Saturday night had to feel deflating for a third defeat of the year.
25 Atlanta United 2
(1-3-0)
Week 4: @ HFD
2
Last Week:
27
Jackson Conway finally got things going for Atlanta on Sunday night with the fourth hat trick in club history. He and his teammates will be hoping that’s a spark for bigger things.
26 Charleston Battery
(1-2-0)
Week 4: v. LV
6
Last Week:
20
The Battery want to play directly, but right now they’re struggling to string passes together consistently. A 55 percent passing success rate isn’t good no matter your intended style.
27 New York Red Bulls II
(1-3-0)
Week 4: @ TUL
1
Last Week:
26
The Red Bulls II have the fourth-highest Expected Goals Against mark in the league (6.57xGA) and only one goal to their credit this season. There are positives here, but they’ve got to tighten up at the back.
