Young forward scores twice before ending game in net as MBFC takes 3-2 victory at Laney Stadium

OAKLAND, Calif. – Chase Boone scored a pair of goals, and ended the game in goal as an emergency goalkeeper in second-half stoppage time, as Monterey Bay F.C. claimed its first victory in the USL Championship with a 3-2 win against Oakland Roots SC at a sold-out Laney Stadium on Saturday night.

Monterey Bay struck first in the eighth minute when Seku Conneh held up play in the penalty area and laid a pass back to Boone that the young forward fired into the top-left corner of the net from the top of the box. Roots SC almost equalized just past the half-hour mark as Charlie Dennis’ corner kick was flicked on at the near post and deflected off the crossbar before going behind, while off another corner Dariusz Formella was unable to control his header at the back post and sent his finish high. The hosts leveled from the penalty spot six minutes before halftime, though, as Ottar Magnus Karlsson converted to the right corner after a handball in the box by the visitors.

Oakland took the lead four minutes into the second half as a pass over the top into Edgardo Rito on the right flank saw the full back deliver a pass into the feet of Karlsson for a first-time finish from eight yards. Monterey Bay responded midway through the second half, however, as Boone struck again, flicking home a header off a corner kick from the right by James Murphy into the left corner of the net.

Roots SC tried to regain the lead, and Juan Carlos Azocar fired just wide of the left post with less than 15 minutes remaining from the top of the penalty area, but with a minute to go Monterey Bay grabbed the lead as Hugh Roberts headed home from close range after a header back into the six-yard area off a free kick on the left by Kai Greene. The visitors then had to end the game down to 10 men as goalkeeper Rafael Diaz was forced from the game due to injury – resulting in Boone ending the game in net – but MBFC held on to claim its first three points of its history.
