Late strike in first half earns Galaxy II first win of the season with 1-0 result

CARSON, Calif. – Taylor Davila scored the only goal late in the first half as the LA Galaxy II earned a 1-0 victory against Rio Grande Valley FC on Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park to earn their first win of the 2022 USL Championship season.

The Toros had the first big chance of the game in the 26th minute when they held possession in the attacking third following a free kick, setting up a shot for Ricky Ruiz from 20 yards that rang off the right post and away to safety. Los Dos’ Preston Judd threatened with two minutes to go in the opening half on a shot that was parried by RGVFC goalkeeper Colin Miller, but off the ensuing corner kick the Galaxy II were awarded a penalty kick for a handball in the box. Judd stepped up, and while his initial shot to the right corner was saved by Miller, Davila followed up and finished the rebound to put the hosts ahead at the break.

RGVFC had a chance to level midway through the second half when Frank Lopez held off a defender to set up Emilio Ycaza for a shot from the left side of the penalty area that was saved by the Galaxy II’s Eric Lopez. LA’s Michael Salazar – facing a former club – also went close with 19 minutes to go as he headed just wide of the left post off a corner kick by Davila from the right.

The Toros threatened to level late on when Dylan Borczak was played into the left side of the penalty area by Ycaza only to be thwarted by Eric Lopez with a kick-save on his shot to the right corner. Frank Nodarse also had a chance in second-half stoppage time as he headed wide of the left post off a corner kick from the right, but the Galaxy II held firm to take all three points.
