LouCity, SD Loyal take perfect records on road as part of five-game midweek slate

Two of the USL Championship’s seven teams that have made a 2-0-0 start to the new campaign, and another that is undefeated, will be in action on the road on Wednesday night as part of a five-game slate to kick off Week 3 of the regular season.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of a full night of action across the country.

New York Red Bulls II vs. Louisville City FC

Venue: MSU Soccer Park
Kickoff: 7 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: NY 19%, LOU 58%, Draw 23%

The Lowdown: Louisville City FC will try to keep its perfect start to the season moving forward as it heads on the road for the first time to visit the New York Red Bulls II. LouCity picked up a 2-0 victory on Saturday night against Miami FC as Paolo DelPiccolo and Brian Ownby each found the net, earning new goalkeeper Kyle Morton his second consecutive shutout between the sticks. Morton has faced only two shots on target so far this campaign, and that could be challenged by a Red Bulls II side that while having only won one of its first three outings this season after a 3-0 defeat to Loudoun United FC on Saturday. The loss came in part due to a first-half red card to New York’s Christopher Cragwell that put a damper on a bright start for the hosts. While the Red Bulls II have played three games so far, its Expected Goals mark is 4.20xG according to American Soccer Analysis, second-highest in the league so far.

Spotlight Players
New York Red Bulls II – Jeremy Rafanello:
The talented young attacking midfielder made his season debut for New York against Loudoun and notched a pair of shots for the hosts.

Louisville City FC – Enoch Mushagalusa: The speedy Congolese winger has made a pair of substitute appearances this season and could be in line for a first start as LouCity potentially rotates its lineup before Saturday’s rivalry clash with Indy Eleven.

Atlanta United 2 vs. Tampa Bay Rowdies

Venue: Fifth Third Bank Stadium
Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: ATL 22%, TBR 54%, Draw 24%

The Lowdown: The Tampa Bay Rowdies will look to build on their first victory of the season when they head to face an Atlanta United 2 side it has never lost to in 10 prior meetings. The Rowdies took a 2-0 victory against Indy Eleven this past Saturday in their home opener at Al Lang Stadium as Juan Tejada notched a goal and assist, with his goal after 34 seconds breaking a 584-day scoreless streak that ran through the full 2021 season. Atlanta, meanwhile, has suffered defeat in each of its two opening games, including a 1-0 loss to the New York Red Bulls II last Wednesday night that saw Aiden McFadden be sent off in the first half. That will see McFadden – who led Atlanta with eight goals last season – unavailable for selection against Tampa Bay as he serves a one-game suspension.

Players to Watch
Atlanta United 2 – Nicolas Firmino:
The former Union Omaha midfielder has started both contests so far for Atlanta and will need to play well against a strong Rowdies’ midfield unit.

Tampa Bay Rowdies – Juan Tejada: The Panamanian forward could get a chance to add to his goal on Saturday at a venue where he’s found the net twice in three prior visits, all three ending in Tampa Bay wins.

FC Tulsa vs. San Diego Loyal SC

Venue: ONEOK Field
Kickoff: 8:30 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: TUL 34%, SD 40%, Draw 26%

The Lowdown: FC Tulsa and San Diego Loyal SC will both try to build on weekend victories as they meet for the first time in their respective histories in an interconference clash at ONEOK Field. Tulsa earned its first win of the season on Saturday with a 3-1 victory against Birmingham Legion FC that saw both Rodrigo da Costa and Joaquin Rivas find the net and Sean Lewis put in a solid performance in goal. The hosts will be without Rivas and fellow El Salvador international Ronald Rodriguez on Wednesday as they prepare for this week’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying games for La Selecta. SD Loyal has won each of its first two games of the season for the first time in its three-year history after a 2-0 win against Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday that saw Kyle Adams and Charlie Adams find the net and Koke Vegas record his first shutout. The visitors will try to make it three in a row in Tulsa, which has won each of its past three home contests dating back to last season.

Players to Watch
FC Tulsa – Machuca:
The Honduran scored his first goal late in Tulsa’s clash with Birmingham to put the game away and could be in line to start in place of Joaquin Rivas, away on international duty.

San Diego Loyal SC – Charlie Adams: The veteran midfielder has notched four key passes so far this season as well as a standout goal against Sacramento, and will be important in trying to contain Tulsa’s attacking potential.

El Paso Locomotive FC vs. Las Vegas Lights FC

Venue: Southwest University Park
Kickoff: 9 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: ELP 67%, LV 13%, Draw 20%

The Lowdown: El Paso Locomotive FC will try to claim its first points of the season as it plays host to a Las Vegas Lights FC side coming off a big weekend win last Saturday. Lights FC took a 2-1 victory against Phoenix Rising FC in its home opener at Cashman Field as Danny Trejo had a goal and assist in just the second win all-time for Las Vegas against Phoenix. Las Vegas will be without a pair of players due to international duty, including Mexico U-20 Men’s National Team defender Antonio Leone, who has played the duration of the club’s first two matches, while El Paso will be without for players due to international call-ups including United States U-20 international Diego Luna and winger Christiano Francois, selected by Haiti. Locomotive FC will still have a strong available lineup, however, as it looks to avoid a third defeat to start the year after two contests in which the side had led, only to let its advantage slip away.

Players to Watch
El Paso Locomotive FC – Emmanuel Sonupe:
The English winger has recorded a goal and assist in his first two games for Locomotive FC and has impressed with his speed and creativity in the attacking third.

Las Vegas Lights FC – Dekel Keinan: The veteran center back should be in line to return to the lineup in Leone’s absence as the visitors look for another solid defensive showing.

LA Galaxy II vs. Rio Grande Valley FC

Venue: Dignity Health Sports Park
Kickoff: 10:30 p.m. ET
Broadcast: ESPN+
538.com Predictor: LA 28%, RGV 45%, Draw 27%

The Lowdown: Rio Grande Valley FC will complete its two-game swing out west by facing the LA Galaxy II as both sides look to rebound from narrow defeats last time out. The Toros were unable to hold on late against Orange County SC in a 2-1 defeat at Championship Soccer Stadium that saw the hosts score the winner deep in second-half stoppage time after Frank Lopez had tied the game late on for his second goal of the season. Los Dos also suffered a 2-1 defeat against San Antonio FC last Saturday despite a fine goal by Panamanian midfielder Carlos Harvey and a stellar midfield performance by Daniel Aguirre, who logged 11 chances created and provided the assist on Harvey’s goal. The Galaxy II have dropped their first two games of the season, and will be looking to get their first points on the board on home turf.

Players to Watch
LA Galaxy II – Daniel Aguirre:
Coming off an impressive two-way performance, Aguirre will try to drive his side to its first points of the season with a combination of attacking threat and solid ball-winning skills.

Rio Grande Valley FC – Frank Lopez: The Cuban forward has two goals in two games and will try to add to that against the side he broke through with in the Championship during the 2018 season.
