Attacking midfielder records goal, assist as Lights FC takes only second win against Phoenix in history

LAS VEGAS – Las Vegas Lights FC took only its second win against Phoenix Rising FC in 13 all-time meetings between the clubs as a goal and assist by Danny Trejo led to a 2-1 victory at Cashman Field on Saturday night.

Lights FC took the lead in the 12th minute when a turnover in midfield gave possession to Cal Jennings, who quickly pushed the hosts forward and found Trejo in the left channel for a first-time finish to the bottom-right corner of the net. Trejo had the chance to double Las Vegas’ lead six minutes later as he won a battle for possession with a defender and broke forward again only this time to be denied by Phoenix’s Ben Lundt.

Lundt made another good save to deny Jennings in the 34th minute as a flicked header on played the forward into space for a low shot the German goalkeeper turned aside. Four minutes later, Lights FC almost capitalized on another counterattack as Alvaro Quezada’s shot to the left corner was saved. Phoenix almost scrambled an equalizer five minutes before the halftime break as after Santi Moar’s initial shot was saved the ball came to Arturo Rodriguez, who had his effort blocked on the line by Las Vegas’ Frank Daroma, and Lights FC’s defense came to the rescue of goalkeeper Tomas Romero on the hour-mark when Claudio Repetto’s shot was blocked on the line by Morten Björshol.

Phoenix’s Aodhan Quinn hit the woodwork in the 65th minute with a free kick from the right of center outside the penalty area, the ball hitting Romero in the back after it came back off the right upright before going behind for a corner, but three minutes later Quezada doubled Las Vegas’ lead as he got played in by Trejo and finished well to the left corner. Repetto found the net with 13 minutes to go for Phoenix, though, as Joey Calistri intercepted a pass as Las Vegas tried to play out of its own defensive end and quickly fed the Italian for a low finish, but the visitors were unable to find an equalizer late on as they finished with only four shots on target overall.
