Taintor scores decisive goal early in the second half in 2-1 victory as both sides end with 10 men

CARSON, Calif. – Mitchell Taintor’s goal early in the second half proved the difference as San Antonio FC held off a strong performance by the LA Galaxy II to take a 2-1 victory at Dignity Health Sports Park in a game that saw both teams end down to 10 men, and Los Dos outshoot their visitors 22-10.

San Antonio struck first in the 10th minute when Trinidad and Tobago international curled a pass into the top of the penalty area from the right that David Loera controlled well with his chest, and then volleyed over the advancing goalkeeper from 12 yards. Los Dos hit back on the half-hour mark, however, as Panamanian international Carlos Harvey was left unmarked on a corner and volleyed home Daniel Aguirre’s delivery from the right to the far side of the penalty area.

The Galaxy II went close to taking the lead four minutes before halftime when Cameron Dunbar tried a curling effort from the right side of the penalty area that SAFC goalkeeper Cristian Bonilla parried before volleying the ball in midair to take away a chance at a rebound. The hosts were reduced to 10 men seven minutes into the second half, however, as Adrian Gonzalez was sent off for his second yellow card, and a minute later Taintor headed home an angled free kick by Mohammed Abu from the left into the net.

San Antonio was also reduced to 10 men in the 55th minute when Elliot Collier was sent off, making it 10-on-10, and Los Dos almost responded in kind as Liam Doyle’s header off a corner kick from the left was cleared off the line by SAFC’s Connor Maloney. The hosts continued to push for an equalizer late, and a shot by Victor Valdez deflected wide of the left post off SAFC defender Carter Manley in second-half stoppage time, but San Antonio held firm to pick up a second consecutive win to start the season.
