Antoine Hoppenot’s second-half finish sends hosts to 1-0 win before 5,334 in home opener

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Antoine Hoppenot scored the only goal as Detroit City FC earned its first victory in the USL Championship with a 1-0 win against the Charleston Battery in the club’s home opener before a crowd of 5,334 at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Battery threatened early as DZ Harmon rang the right post with a free kick from just outside the top-right edge of the penalty area, and in the 25th minute Augustine Williams went close as he outdueled his marker on a ball into the penalty area but fired over the crossbar. DCFC came further into the game as the first half progressed, however, but were held at bay by a Battery defense that limited clean looks at goal for the hosts.

That changed five minutes into the second half as Hoppenot became the first goalscorer for Detroit in the Championship, putting away a second chance from eight yards after Maxi Rodriguez’s initial shot had been parried by Battery goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky. Charleston had difficulty getting back into the game after going behind, but almost grabbed a late equalizer in stoppage time when Mauro Cichero got a clear look at goal only to be denied by a low save by DCFC’s Nathan Steinwascher. That proved to be all for the visitors, as Detroit earned its first three points in the Championship.
