MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC announced on Saturday the club had signed goalkeeper Drew Romig, bringing the 2021 USL League Two Goalkeeper of the Year to the club to complement its squad. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“Drew is a goalkeeper that we identified during the fall collegiate season and then went through our processes of getting him evaluated through our closed trial and an extended pre-season invite,” said 901 FC Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He has proven during that time that he has a high ability and potential to be a very good goalkeeper in this country.

“Drew has talent and checks off a lot of boxes for what a good goalkeeper must have. He is an even better person, and we are very excited to welcome him to the Bluff City and to the 901 FC.”

Romig was a USL Academy signing by the Richmond Kickers in the USL Championship prior to his collegiate career, and initially attended the University of North Carolina before transferring to Belmont University for the 2020-21 season. As a senior, Romig registered four shutouts in nine starts and was named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team and All-Southern Conference Tournament Team.

Last summer, Romig’s standout play continued in USL League Two as he conceded only three goals in 10 appearances for South Georgia Tormenta FC 2 while recording a save percentage of 90 percent and a goals-against average of 0.31 as the side advance to the USL League Two Playoffs. Romig’s play saw him honored as League Two Goalkeeper of the Year and as a selection to the League Two All-League Team.

“We've known Drew for a couple of years, and we think there are a lot of upsides with Drew. He is a very good shot stopper, he's good on crosses and is vocal for someone his age,” 901 FC Assistant Sporting Director Caleb Patterson Sewell said. “We believe Drew has the ability to transition to the pro game and we look forward to working with him this season.”
