Ghanaian winger has made 47 appearances in Championship’s regular season in career

DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Thursday the club had signed winger Francis Atuahene ahead of the 2022 USL Championship season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

A native of Accra, Ghana, Atuahene spent the 2021 season with fellow USL Championship club Memphis 901 FC, where he made 18 appearances as the side advanced to the USL Championship Playoffs for the first time in its history. The No. 4 pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas, the 25-year-old almost made history when he scored 42 seconds into his Major League Soccer debut after coming on as a substitute against the San Jose Earthquakes on June 8, 2009.

Atuahene has played the majority of his career in the USL Championship, however, going on loan with OKC Energy FC in the 2018 season, Austin Bold FC in the 2019 campaign, and San Diego Loyal SC during the 2020 season. Overall, he has made 47 regular-season appearances in the league and recorded five goals, one assists and 12 chances created.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Atuahene played for three seasons at the University of Michigan where he scored 24 goals and notched 11 assists in 49 appearances. He was twice voted to the All-Big Ten Conference First Team during his time with the Wolverines.

Atuahene also competed in USL League Two for Flint City Bucks FC during the 2017 season where he recorded three goals in six appearances and was selected as the No. 1 college prospect from USL League Two in the 2017 draft class.
