2022 Outlook

It was hard to imagine a team being as snake-bit in front of goal as Loudoun United FC was during the 2021 season. Despite ranking eighth in the USL Championship with an Expected Goals mark of 49.63xG, the side finished with only 31 tallies in the regular season, a deficit of -18.63xG. That, combined with a defense that leaked goals consistently over the course of the season, led to a league-fewest four wins and a league-lowest -47 goal differential.

Loudoun’s fundamental problem was its finishing. While the side got solid contributions from attacking midfielder Ted Ku-DiPietro – who over the offseason signed as a Homegrown Player with D.C. United – as he notched seven goals and three assists on 45 chances created and a 5.18 Expected Assists mark, the side overall ranked last in the league with a 7.38 shot conversion percentage and a second-lowest 40.78 shooting accuracy rate. There was no question the threat that Loudoun posed – one of its four wins came against Eastern Conference power Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC – but the lack of finishing early in the season resulted in a spiral down that the team seemed unable to snap out of.

The side has added new pieces that will at least try to address the defensive frailties it experienced a season ago. Former Chicago Fire Homegrown signing Grant Lillard will look to revive his career after injury and a lack of playing time since leaving Indiana University as an All-America selection and MAC Hermann Trophy finalist in 2017, while goalkeeper Trey Muse joins the side after competing on loan with San Diego Loyal SC in the Championship last season from Seattle Sounders FC. It might not be enough for Loudoun to reach the playoffs, but if their fortunes experience a reversal on a season ago, the side could still be dangerous enough to give some of the big Eastern Conference contenders a scare.

Two To Watch

Trey Muse, Goalkeeper

Trey Muse was one of the busiest goalkeepers in the USL Championship as he went on loan at San Diego Loyal SC last season, averaging just over four saves per game in 15 appearances before suffering a season-ending injury. The high shot-rate the former U.S. U-20 international faced meant he didn’t record a shutout for SD Loyal, but Muse’s other numbers were solid – his 72.3 save percentage ranked sixth among goalkeepers with at least 15 appearances, and his 65.6 save percentage on shots from inside the penalty area was also well above league average. Muse is likely to be busy again for a Loudoun side that tied for second in shots faced (486) and shots on target faced (205) a season ago, but the potential the 22-year-old has shown makes him a good goalkeeping prospect to watch this year.

Grant Lillard, Defender

When Grant Lillard signed as a Homegrown Player with the Chicago Fire ahead of the 2018 season, the future seemed promising. At Indiana University, he had been an All-America First Team selection and the Big Ten Defender of the Year as well as a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Since then, nothing has quite gone right for the 6-foot-4 defender, who over his first four professional seasons has made 24 appearances across all competitions. Now 26 years old, Lillard is getting a chance at a fresh start at Loudoun and will be expected to anchor the club’s back line defensively, giving him a chance at a full season of action with United. If it comes off positively, it should breathe new life into a career that has not fulfilled the promise it began with.

Coach

Head Coach – Ryan Martin (4th Season)

Ryan Martin enters his third full season leading Loudoun United FC seeking a way to shore up the side’s defense while hoping for better fortune in front of goal in the new campaign. A former assistant at FC Cincinnati and Wake Forest University, Martin has new pieces to work with all over the field but will still face a challenge to consistently compete in United’s final season in the Championship.

Key Number

34.08According to American Soccer Analysis, Loudoun United had an Expected Points total of 34.08xP during the 2021 season. Instead, the side’s combined attacking and defensive struggles left the side bottom of the Atlantic Division with 15 points, the fewest of any side in the league.
