Regional matchups feature LouCity hosting Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, Switchbacks welcoming Hailstorm FC

CHICAGO – The draw for the Second Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was announced by U.S Soccer on Friday as the 23 participating USL Championship clubs learned their opening matchups in the 103rd edition of the historic tournament, set for the week of April 5-7.

Highlighting the draw were seven matchups that will see Championship clubs face USL League One counterparts in their own region, or from other parts of the country. Perennial Championship title-contender Louisville City FC will open at home to League One’s Chattanooga Red Wolves SC in the first Open Cup game at Lynn Family Stadium, while Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC will play host to League One newcomer Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC at Weidner Field.

The Championship’s Charleston Battery and League One’s South Georgia Tormenta FC will also square off in a matchup with a regional flavor, but two Championship sides will also make a trek to the Carolinas with first-time Open Cup participant Rio Grande Valley FC being drawn away against League One’s North Carolina FC, and Oakland Roots SC getting a cross-country trip to face 2020 League One title-winners Greenville Triumph SC.

Elsewhere, defending USL Championship title-holder Orange County SC will begin its Open Cup journey at home as it plays host to the Los Angeles Force at Championship Soccer Stadium. Phoenix Rising FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Detroit City FC also got drawn at home against professional opposition, with Rising FC set to host Valley United FC at Wild Horse Pass, the Hounds drawn to face Maryland Bobcats FC at Highmark Stadium and Detroit City to play Michigan Stars FC at Keyworth Stadium.

A pair of notable matchups will see both New Mexico United host its first Open Cup contest at the University of New Mexico Soccer Complex, and FC Tulsa play host at ONEOK Field for the first time since 2015 against clubs from the Open Division. New Mexico will face the winner of a First Round contest between USL League Two club Park City Red Wolves SC and the Las Vegas Legends, while FC Tulsa will host either Tulsa Athletic or Azteca FC.

Birmingham Legion FC, Hartford Athletic, Miami FC, Sacramento Republic FC, San Antonio FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies will also host Open Division teams in the Second Round.

Thirty-one matches overall will be played in the Second Round, with the winners advancing to the Third Round scheduled for April 19-21, where 17 clubs from Major League Soccer will enter the tournament. The remaining eight clubs from MLS will enter in the Round of 32, scheduled for May 10-11.

Contests in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will air exclusively on ESPN+, which will also serve as the home for every game of the 2022 USL Championship and League One seasons as they begin in March and April.
