DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Monday it had signed USL Championship veteran Antoine Hoppenot ahead of its inaugural season in the league this spring. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Hoppenot joins DCFC having spent the past two-and-a-half seasons at Louisville City FC, where he recorded nine goals and 11 assists in 61 regular season contests. Hoppenot played a key role in LouCity’s progression to the 2019 USL Championship Final, with his late equalizer in second-half stoppage time against Indy Eleven in the Eastern Conference Final sending the game to extra time, where the visitors took a 3-1 win to advance to the title game.

Overall in his career, Hoppenot has recorded 31 goals and 33 assists in 168 appearances in the Championship’s regular season, making him one of only seven players to have recorded both 30 goals and 30 assists in the league’s history.

A graduate of Princeton, Hoppenot began his professional career with the Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer after being selected in the MLS Supplemental Draft in 2012. During his early seasons with the Union, Hoppenot went on loan to the Harrisburg City Islanders on three occasions. During the second in 2014, he played a notable role in the side advancing to the USL Championship Final as the No. 8 seed in the field.

Hoppenot also made 69 appearances for the Union in Major League Soccer, recording seven goals and three assists, before joining FC Cincinnati in 2016 for its inaugural season in the USL Championship. The following year he moved to Reno 1868 FC and helped lead one of the most potent attacks in the league over the following two years with 17 goals and 19 assists in 64 appearances for the club.

In 2019, Hoppenot signed with the Tampa Bay Rowdies as a free agent, but after making nine appearances for the side made the move to Louisville in a trade that returned Lucky Mkosana to the Rowdies. The 31-year-old will now bring that experience to Detroit as part of Les Rouges’ inaugural Championship squad.
