SAN DIEGO – San Diego Loyal SC announced on Monday it had re-signed goalkeeper Austin Guerrero ahead of the 2022 USL Championship. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Guerrero returns to SD Loyal for a third season after playing a key role in the side’s first trip to the USL Championship Playoffs this past season. Moved into a starting role midway through the campaign, the 32-year-old made 17 appearances and recorded five shutouts and 43 saves as San Diego earned a third-placed finish in the Pacific Division. Guerrero recorded a save percentage of 71.7 percent and a +1.70 Goals Added rating.

A native of Chula Vista, Calif., Guerrero was part of San Diego’s inaugural squad and made a pair of appearances in the 2020 season. Prior to the club’s arrival in the Championship, he had previously played in the league for North Carolina FC during the 2018 season, where he made one appearance for the side.

Guerrero had competed collegiately for the University of Portland, during which time he also competed for the Portland Timbers U-23s in USL League Two, before joining the professional ranks in Mexico as he signed with Liga MX club Tigres UANL. After a loan spell with second-tier side Altamira – where he recorded 32 appearances and made six shutouts – Guerrero made the move to Puebla for one season before joining Alianza in Panama, where he made 13 appearances for the club.
