OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Tuesday the club had signed Polish winger Dariusz Formella ahead of the 2022 USL Championship season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Formella most recently featured for Roots SC’s Northern California rival Sacramento Republic FC where he made 51 appearances and scored 17 goals over the past three seasons. A former Poland U-21 international, Formella helped Republic FC reach the USL Championship Playoffs in both the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.

“I know Dariusz very well. His character and quality on and off the ball are attributes that not many players possess in this league,” said Roots SC Head Coach Juan Guerra. “He wants to win and understands the importance of what we are building here in Oakland. He will help us unlock games and create many chances in the attacking third.”

Prior to joining Republic FC, Formella began his professional career in his home country as he played for Arka Gdynia in the Polish Second Division. In 2013 he was signed by Lech Poznan, where he would go on to make nearly 100 appearances in Poland’s Ekstraklasa.

His final stop before coming to the United States was with Rakow Czestochowa. During his seven seasons in Poland, Formella won the Polish First Division in 2014-15, the Polish Cup in 2016-17 and two Polish Super Cups in 2015 and 2016.
