DETROIT – Detroit City Football Club announced on Monday the return of the club’s captain Stephen Carroll as its first official signing as a member of the USL Championship. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

A native of Cork, Ireland, Carroll has been with DCFC since the 2017 season and captain for the past three campaign. Previously a winner of the NISA Golden Ball award in 2020 and the club’s 2018 Black Arrow recipient, Carroll anchored a backline that boasted a +42 goal differential throughout Le Rouge’s tenure in the third tier, surrendering just 20 goals in 36 matches. Carroll led all defenders in NISA last season with four goals on his way to All-League First Team honors.

Carroll has made 45 appearances for Detroit City across all competitions since joining the club. He had previously competed collegiately at Davenport University where he made 55 appearances in three seasons and recorded eight goals and two assists and in 2017 was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defender of the Year.

Detroit City FC will open its debut season in the USL Championship on Saturday, March 12, at San Antonio FC. The home opener for Le Rouge is on March 19 at Keyworth Stadium against the Charleston Battery.
