SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento Republic FC announced on Thursday the club had signed defender Conor Donovan for the 2022 USL Championship season, pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Conor has been one of the league’s best defenders in each the last two seasons,” said Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant. “But beyond his playing ability, he is bringing leadership and a team-first mentality, which will only strengthen our locker room.”

Donovan joins Republic FC after spending the past campaign with OKC Energy FC, where he was one of three players to play every minute of the 2021 Championship regular season, recording 32 appearances and 2,880 minutes of action. Donovan led the club with 120 clearances and 40 blocked shots as Energy FC completed the campaign as one of just eight clubs in USL Championship play to concede fewer than 40 goals.

The seven-year Championship veteran joined OKC after spending the 2020 season with North Carolina FC, where he made 14 appearances during the pandemic-shortened season. Selected with the No. 22 pick of the 2015 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Orlando City SC, Donovan suffered a knee injury in his professional debut and was then loaned to Orlando City B for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

A former member of the United States U-17 and U-20 Men’s National Team, Donovan has also competed in the Championship for Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC and Rio Grande Valley FC, and has made 129 overall appearances in the league, recording six goals and two assists.
