Recent New Mexico United signing Alexis Souahy has been selected to represent Comoros at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, with the country set to compete at the event for the first time in its history when it kicks off on January 9. Souahy joined New Mexico on December 28 after competing previously in the USL Championship for Louisville City FC.

A native of Montreuil, France of Comoran descent, Souahy has yet to make his senior international debut for the country but was included in the gameday squad for its warm-up contest this past Friday, a 2-1 defeat against Malawi. The 26-year-old has made 92 appearances in the Championship between the regular season and playoffs over the past four seasons, all spent at Louisville City FC, and has recorded five goals and five assists. Souahy was part of LouCity’s 2018 Championship title squad when he recorded 23 appearances across the regular season and playoffs.

Comoros qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time after finishing second to Egypt in Group G as it suffered only one defeat in six games to hold the edge over Kenya by two points. The side will face Gabon in its opening game on Monday, January 10 at 2 p.m. ET before facing Morocco (Jan. 14) and Ghana (Jan. 18) to round out the group stage.

All games at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations are set to air on BeIN Sports in the United States.
