First professional goal against San Antonio won narrow duel in Final to take award

TAMPA, Fla. – It was a bolt from the blue when it arrived. Now it’s the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Goal of the Year.

Austin Yearwood’s first professional goal in the USL Championship for New Mexico United against San Antonio FC took the annual award on Monday as it outdueled Sacramento Republic FC’s Luis Felipe Fernandes with a 52-48 percent victory in the Final of the bracket conducted online over the past week.

Yearwood’s goal came in his 82nd regular season appearance and sixth season in the league, having begun his career with hometown club the Charlotte Independence in the 2016 campaign. Cutting in around the top-left corner of the penalty area, the full back delivered a perfectly curled finish into the top-right corner of the net to break open a victory for the home side at Isotopes Park.

The 27-year-old had previously defeated teammate Daniel Bruce in the Quarterfinals of the bracket before eliminating Hiroki Kurimoto in the Semifinals before edging past Fernandes in the Final.
