OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Wednesday it had re-signed South African-born midfielder Lindo Mfeka for the 2022 USL Championship season. Mfeka scored two goals and dished out a team-high four assists as the side reached the 2021 USL Championship Playoffs, presented by TwinSpires.

Mfeka was named to the USL Championship’s Team of the Week following a two-goal performance as the starting striker against the Tacoma Defiance on September 15 at Las Positas College. The 27-year-old missed out on the club’s postseason run to the Western Conference Semifinals after picking up an injury late in the season.

“Lindo was an important player for us in 2021,” said Roots VP of Soccer Eric Yamamoto. “He has qualities that not many others have in this league and the ability to pick a pass and see an angle that helps us create chances.”

Mfeka joined the professional ranks in 2017 when he was selected by the San Jose Earthquakes in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft and spent his first season on loan in the Championship at Reno 1868 FC after making one MLS appearance as a rookie. Mfeka continued with Reno in the following two seasons, and over his career has made 95 regular-season appearances in the Championship, recording 16 goals, 12 assists and 135 chances created in the attacking third overall.
