Former assistant has overseen success with First Team, Academy program since arrival in club’s formative stage

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico United announced on Monday the appointment of Zach Prince as its new Head Coach and Technical Director ahead of the 2022 USL Championship season. Prince, who has had an impressive tenure as a First Assistant since United’s first match, is the second Head Coach in United’s history.

“I know, first-hand, having been here for three years, what it means to people to be a part of this club,” said Prince. “Being a part of the club is a great responsibility because people care so much. As head coach, I’m here to act on the expectations that have been created by our teams the last three years, and the expectations that the fans have for us to be successful. I’m really excited for that challenge and can’t wait to get started.”

“The work that Coach Prince has undertaken over the last three and a half years – from helping craft our club’s culture, to sweating with our players every single day on the training pitch – often went unseen by most people,” said United Owner/President Peter Trevisani. “Soon, all of New Mexico will see what Zach has to offer. His determination, knowledge of the game, and ability to build upon the culture that he has been crucial in creating at United make him the perfect fit to lead our club into the future. United fans can look forward to long-term, sustained success with Zach Prince at the helm.”

In his three-and-a-half years as First Assistant at United, Prince has been crucial to the club’s successes, which include two playoff appearances, reaching the Quarterfinals of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and massive community impact. He has been a critical influence in the development of the club’s ethos, and the growth and development of players at the first team and youth levels.

In addition to serving as a tactical leader for the last three-and-a-half years for United, Prince has been crucial in the development of the New Mexico United Academy. This competitive team, made up entirely of New Mexicans, is a full scholarship program through the efforts of the Somos Unidos Foundation, and is one of just eight teams from around the nation to qualify for the USL Academy Playoffs, which take place this December.

Prior to his previous role as First Assistant Coach for United, Prince enjoyed a prestigious professional playing career that spanned 162 matches over seven seasons and included two USL titles with the Charleston Battery (2010, 2012.) He was born in Columbia, South Carolina and is a husband and father of one.
