The Battery return home for a midweek match against LA Galaxy II on Wednesday, October 20. Kickoff at Patriots Point is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST, the game is the rescheduled date of the original June 4 tie that was postponed because of inclement weather.

Due to the postponement, this will now be the first time since 2014 that the Battery and Galaxy II square off. It will also be the second-ever meeting between the sides.

The first game resulted in a 3-0 victory for the Black and Yellow, on June 14, 2014. The evening featured goals from Colin Falvey, Dane Kelly and Heviel Cordoves. Kelly’s goal, in particular, was assisted by a young up-and-comer named Jarad van Schaik, whose perfectly-placed pass to Kelly helped Charleston double their lead. Jarad, who first signed with the Battery in 2013, will be the lone player on the pitch for both matches between the clubs.

Looking at the Conference tables, Los Angeles are fourth in the Pacific Division with a record of 11-12-6 (39 pts) and Charleston are fifth in Atlantic Division with a record of 9-12-7 (37 pts).

Galaxy II are coming off a large 5-0 home win over El Paso Locomotive FC on Sunday. The California club were powered by goals from Carlos Harvey, Preston Judd (2), Jorge Hernandez and Cameron Dunbar. Los Angeles are still fighting to clinch a playoff spot and the effort displayed Sunday helped them maintain their advantage over Oakland Roots (fifth place, 34 points). Galaxy II will aim to build on that win come Wednesday in hopes of shoring up their playoff spot as the regular season winds down.

The Battery will look to bounce back from a 5-1 road loss to Charlotte Independence that knocked the Black and Yellow out of playoff contention. Romario Piggott scored his third goal of the season just before halftime as the Battery looked to claw back from an early 2-0 deficit. Claudio Repetto also tallied his third assist in as many games. The Independence’s offense, however, proved overwhelming. The Black and Yellow will look to make the most of the remaining four games on the schedule, utilizing the time for experience and playing for pride to finish the season strong, starting Wednesday.

The match is the second visit to the Lowcountry for Los Angeles, but will be their first game played at Patriots Point.

Ones to Watch This Week

Jorge Hernandez

Hernandez is among Galaxy II’s most potent threats all year. The midfielder leads the club in chances created with 79 (over 50 more than the next player after him), and is second in both goals (12) and assists (6). Against El Paso, he tallied one goal, one assist and three key passes. The Galaxy academy product has made plenty of noise so far this season and will look to maintain that pace on the cross-country journey.

Jarad van Schaik

Jarad van Schaik has played an important role in the back line since his return last month. The veteran defender led the team in clearances (3) while registering two interceptions, five recoveries and two tackles against Charlotte. He also amassed a strong 92.3% pass success rate, completing 48 of 52 passes. As an energetic LA Galaxy II squad comes into town, expect the captain to be a key piece of the Battery defense diffusing any threats the visitors pose.
